During my stay in Cape Town earlier this year I met Yann, a charming and passionated photographer born at the Réunion Island (yes, the island is more than a place where aircraft debris have washed). In Cape Town he started a special project called TODAY which I just have to share with you guys!
The idea is simple: a location (city, village, community) that Yann will shoot for 24 hours non-stop. Following the shooting, a selection of 24 photos is created and exhibited. Behind this concept, there is a particular desire to show a slice of life during these 24 hours.
His first -TODAY- Yann realized with two friends. It took place in Cape Town on the 20th of February: 24 hours of madness, an intense human and physical adventure. They wanted to show this city as it so few shown or as we forget to see it. The concept and the pictures were a big hit at the exhibition! Since that first 24 hours Yann realized a -TODAY / Paris- and -TODAY / Amsterdam which he is still processing.
One of the main goals of the project is to make something that touches people: to show the daily life of people around the world, their way of living, the differences and the similarities of cultures. Yann even sees historical, archival documents aspect on that project: “I find it crazy that in 20 years, I can come back on these pictures and tell myself that on the 20th of february 2015, in Cape Town, people were living like that!”
But first of all, Yann does it because he’s having a ball. Taking photos must be a pleasure above all…
