Jansz is the name of the new restaurant of the just renovated Pulitzer hotel in the heart of the negen straatjes (nine streets) in Amsterdam. The Pulitzer is having a complete make over, and just reopened the first rooms and suites, a renewed bar and restaurant. With Jacu Strauss as head designer, the place looks already spectacular! The old canal houses keep their original allure and old Amsterdam feeling, but with a modern twist and lots of quirky details.
The food at Jansz is as spectacular as the interior and cherishes the same principles of reinventing old classics in a fresh, new way. Chef Cassidy Hallman knows how to make something special out of a “simple” dish. Daring combinations of burrata served with plum loaf or a perfect chees cake with red pepper for instance makes these classics a little more daring and out of the ordinary. The meatballs in a super rich marinara sauce are already the talk of the town and a must try if you ask me. My personal favourites were the somewhat spicy tuna tartar, the super tender bavette and the surprisingly fresh coconut panna cotta desert. But the cherry on the cake was our skilled waiter Bart, who couldn’t hide his enthusiasm and passion for every wine he was serving and every dish that came out of the kitchen. Good food is nothing without good service!
Jansz isn’t cheap but it’s worth every penny and makes a welcome addition to this touristic area where quality is sometimes hard to find. Can’t wait till the whole renovation is completed and we can also enjoy a drink in the huge courtyard!
